Golfer, born in Columbus, Ohio, USA. He won the US Amateur title in 1959 and 1961, then turned professional. Runner-up to Arnold Palmer in the 1960 US Open, as amateur, he has since won all the world's major tournaments: the (British) Open (1966, 1970, 1978), the US Open (1962, 1967, 1972, 1980), the US Professional Golfers Association tournament a record-equalling five times (1963, 1971, 1973, 1975, 1980), and the US Masters a record six times (1963, 1965–6, 1972, 1975, 1986). His win in 1986 was at the age of 46 years 82 days, the oldest winner of the event. His 18 professional majors is a world record. He retired from professional golf after his appearance at The Open at St Andrews in 2005.
